Basic cellular phones provide voice communications, texting, and in some some newer phones, Internet services such as web browsing, instant messaging, and email.
For basic cellular service we recommend Verizon Wireless as our preferred vendor.
A smartphone is like a miniature computer that can also place and receive calls. Smartphones allow users to store information, send email, install programs, and use a mobile phone in one device. They can typically view and sometimes edit documents (i.e., from Microsoft Office). Smartphones can also synchronize with BU’s email server, allowing you to view and delete email from either your computer or your smartphone without having to delete it again from the other device.
For BlackBerry devices, if you prefer, we do have the ability to activate the phone through AT&T or Sprint/Nextel networks.
Direct connect is a push-to-talk system similar to a walkie-talkie. You can only direct connect to other users with this type of device/service. The device can have only direct connect, or it can also include a phone line to make regular calls. If you are interested in using a direct connect device, we offer service through Sprint/Nextel.
Now you can get the broadband speed you require to work efficiently outside the office. Using mobile broadband devices with your laptop, you can connect to the Internet, check your email, and download attachments. Mobile broadband will give you the freedom to stay productive and connected whether you’re on the road or in a meeting across town.
To order mobile broadband service please submit a requisition to Telecommunications. We will need to know what type of device you are requesting (internal laptop card, MIFI card, expresscard, or USB card), your requested rate plan, and the name of the person who will be using the service. While Verizon is our preferred mobile broadband carrier, you may also select a mobile broadband device and plan from Sprint.
