The settings outlined on this page may vary slightly across devices and versions, but these instructions should be generally applicable to all situations.

Note: After you configure your email as described below, you might also want to get BU Mobile! BU’s suite of applications for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Configuring the Mail client:

If you’re viewing this page from your mobile device, open this mobile configuration file to streamline the process.

  1. Make sure you have reviewed steps 1 and 2 on the preceding Using Desktop and Mobile Device Clients page before continuing with the steps outlined below.
  2. From the home screen, tap the Settings icon.
  3. Scroll down and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars on the Settings screen.
  4. On the Mail screen, tap Add Account and then select Other.
  5. Make sure IMAP is selected (if you see it here) and fill in your Name, Address, and a Description of the account (e.g., BU email).
  6. Make sure IMAP is selected (if you see it here) and, under Incoming Mail Server, enter the connection information:
    Host Name: imap.gmail.com
    User Name: your full BU email address is the username in the form login@bu.edu (NOT just login and not as login@gmail.bu.edu).
    Password: your BU Kerberos password
  7. Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) enter the connection information:
    Host Name: smtp.bu.edu
    User Name: your BU login name
    Password: your BU Kerberos password
  8. Tap the Save button at the top of the screen.
  9. Return to the Mail settings screen, and tap the newly created account to finish the configuration. Scroll to the bottom and tap the Advanced item.
  10. Select your desired options under the Mailbox Behaviors and Deleted Messages sections.
  11. Under Incoming Settings, slide Use SSL to the On position (it will turn from gray to blue) and set the other settings as follows:
    Authentication: Password
    Server Port: 993
  12. Under Outgoing Settings, slide Use SSL to the On position and set the other settings as follows:
    Authentication: Password
    Server Port: 465
  13. Finally, use the Back buttons or hardware key to return to the home screen and open the Mail application to test.
  14. You should now be all set to begin using Mail with your BU Google Apps account, but might find helpful the additional settings outlined at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892.

If you ever need to delete an account:

  1. From the home screen, tap the Settings icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars on the Settings screen.
  3. On the Mail screen, select the account you want to delete, scroll down, and choose Delete Account.
