• After launching Thunderbird, go to Tools > Account Settings from the main menu bar. Open the Account Actions drop-down and select Add Mail Account. Then input your information.*
  • Thunderbird will try to automatically detect the settings for the account, but will likely fail so you should click on the Manual Config button.
  • In the section that appears, choose IMAP from the drop-down menu in the Incoming: row.
  • For Server hostname enter acs-imap.bu.edu and indicate that you want to use Port 993. This change should also auto-populate SSL/TLS.
  • For the outgoing (SMTP) Server hostname enter acs-smtp.bu.edu and indicate that you want to use Port 465. This change should also auto-populate SSL/TLS.
  • Also enter your Username which is your BU login name.
  • Next click Re-test and, if you are successful, Create Account.Tbird
  • Once your Account is created, you will be able to go into Tools->Account Settings and modify the settings associated with that account, to match with how you like to use email. For example…
  • You should make sure that the Account is set to Check for new messages at startup.
  • You might also want to set your preferences for deleting mail. For example, you might choose to Move it to the Trash folder. If you do, be sure to also set Clean up (“Expunge”) Inbox on Exit and Empty Trash on Exit.
  • Also, if you have a particular folder that you want to send junk mail to, you can indicate that in the Junk Settings area, or have it deleted after X number of days.
  • Once you’re all set you can click on OK and begin using email.
