IS&T has implemented Enhanced Privacy Mode in BU’s instance of Lync. This control means that, by default, people will not see any information on your availability unless you allow them to. Even if you are sitting at your computer using Lync, your presence will appear to be “Offline” unless you follow the steps outlined below for either Windows or Mac. You can control which presence information people will see, including your availability status (Available, Busy, Away, etc.) and the corresponding color indicator (green, yellow, or red). You can also opt to display your “Out of Office” message when you have one in place.
In the Windows client, the individuals you add to your Contacts list will be able to see your presence. Alternatively, you can opt to make your presence available to everyone without having to add them to Contacts. To change that setting, go to Options->Status and select “I want everyone to be able to see my presence.”
For those you are displaying presence information to, you can manage what they are seeing. Go to Options->Personal and set the settings below according to your personal preference.
Other privacy features available in the Windows client are described in the Microsoft article on presence information.
In the Mac client, only those you add to your Contacts list will be able to see your presence. They will also have the option to display their presence information to you, or not, as shown in the image below.
For those you are displaying presence information to, you can manage what they are seeing. Go to the Lync menu, choose Preferences, and select Account. You can then define the related settings according to your personal preference.
