Firewalls

Overview A firewall is software or hardware that allows communication only between trusted devices over a network such as the Internet.
Available To Students, Faculty, Researchers, Staff, Departments
Benefits Keep your systems safe by preventing unwanted connections. Receive alerts when unwanted devices try to connect to your systems.
Key Features
  • Control network access to a system.
  • Significantly reduce the risk of compromise or abuse by restricting access to networked services.
  • Protect systems that are accidentally misconfigured during setup or maintenance. Firewalls are maintained separately from the computers inside the firewalls, so even insecure systems are protected.
Requirements
  • For individual systems, most operating systems provide a host-based firewall product such as Windows Firewall.
  • For departments, IS&T can discuss options for developing a custom network-level firewall for your needs.
  • At the campus level, everyone benefits from the campus firewall, without any prerequisites.
Cost There is no charge for individual solutions built into operating systems or for the campus firewall.  At the department level, costs depend on the department’s configuration requirements.
