Configuring an AirPort card for use at Boston University

Joining the network:

Mac OS X 10.5

  • While you are near one of the Charles River Campus wireless access points, click on the Airport status menu in the menubar. You will see a list of available wireless network SSIDs.

  • Choose the BU (requires VPN) SSID and your Mac will connect.
  • Before you can access the Internet, you will need to launch the Cisco VPN Client and sign in with your BU login and Kerberos password. For information on installing the VPN Client, see the IT Help Center VPN pages.

Mac OS X 10.4

  • While you are near one of the Charles River Campus wireless access points, click on the AirPort status menu in the menubar and choose Open Internet Connect.
  • If Network BU (requires VPN) does not appear automatically, choose Other and enter BU (requires VPN) in the Network Name field. (Leave the Wireless Security field as None.)
  • Click on OK.
  • Open System Preferences under the Apple Menu and choose Network. In the Network make sure Airport is selected, then click on Configure and TCP/IP . Make sure that Configure IPv4: is set to Using DHCP.
  • Close System Preferences and, if prompted, choose to save changes.

    At this point your AirPort card should be associated with the access point and you should be able to log in to the VPN and begin using the campus network and Internet.

Previous versions of Mac OS X

  • While you are near one of the Charles River Campus wireless access points, click on the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose Other…



  • Enter BU (requires VPN) in the Name field and leave the Password field blank.


  • Click on OK.
  • Open the System Preferences application and click on Network. In the Network pane, use the Show: drop-down to select AirPort. Make sure that Configure: is set to Using DHCP. Close System Preferences and, if prompted, choose to save changes.

    At this point your AirPort card should be associated with the access point and you should be able to log in to the VPN and begin using the campus network and Internet.
