security on bu's wireless network

Boston University's wireless network is secured through one of two methods, depending on how you connect.
  • When accessing the network with the BU (802.1x) Service Set Identifier (SSID), all wireless communications are encrypted using the WPA and IEEE 802.1x standards.
  • When accessing the network with the BU (requires VPN) SSID, all communications are secured via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) which encrypts all network (including wireless) transmissions, including login names and passwords.
Please note that no encryption is used when connecting with the BU Guest (unencrypted) or BU Wireless Help SSIDs.
