using BU 802.1x wireless with the Apple iphone or iPod touch

The iPhone comes bundled with an Internet service, making use of the BU wireless network unnecessary. However, iPod Touch users, or iPhone users who find that they cannot access BU-restricted resources, may do so using 802.1x, which allows you to connect to the BU wireless network using your BU login name and Kerberos password. Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to offer wireless access for individuals who do not have a BU login name and Kerberos password.

If you find that your settings don't match what's described below, you may need to update your software. Plug your iPod Touch or iPhone into your computer and then follow this link: http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/whatsnew.html. Once the upgrade has installed, follow the instructions below.

Instructions for configuring 802.1x

  1. Open Settings.

Troubleshooting

If you can't log in:
If you're repeatedly prompted for your BU login name and password but are still unable to successfully connect to the BU (802.1x) SSID, you may need to Kerberos synchronize. While connected via either Ethernet, BU (requires VPN) or BU Wireless Help, simply go to the Kerberos Sync page (pictured below) and click the "log in" button.

Kerberos Sync Page example

Make 802.1x the default SSID for BU:
If you had previously used either "123" or "BU (requires VPN)" or "BU Wireless Help"
you may have trouble joining the 802.1x network. (The iPhone will likely get stuck after accepting the certificate, staying in the "Joining..." phase indefinitely. Press the Home button to escape this screen.)

In order to be sure your computer connects by default to the BU (802.1x) SSID, follow these steps:

1. Open Settings.

settings

2. Select Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi

3. Tap the blue arrow button next to the name of the network you were previously using (i.e. 123, BU (requires VPN), or BU Wireless Help).

4. Tap the Forget this Network button at the top of the screen.

5. Tap Forget Network.

6. Restart your iPhone: Power off your iPhone by holding the sleep button for several seconds. A slider will appear on screen allowing you to power off the device. Once the iPhone has shut down, start it again by pressing the sleep button.

7. You should now be able to connect to BU (802.1x) as described above.

If you've connected successfully to BU (802.1x) but still can't access the Internet: you may need to restart the Wi-Fi service on your iPhone before you can access the Internet. If you have successfully connected to BU (802.1x) but cannot access web pages or e-mail via Wi-Fi, follow the instructions below to restart the iPhone's Wi-Fi service.

1. Open Settings.

settings

2. Select Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi

3. At the top of the Wi-Fi Networks screen, slide the Wi-Fi switch to the OFF position. Pause for a few seconds, and then slide it back to the ON position.

4. You should now be able to access the Internet.

What next?

You should now be fully connected to the campus network using the BU (802.1x) SSID and able to browse to web sites both on and off campus.
