RESNET

Group Photo

ResNet offers a high-speed Ethernet connection to each resident in the residence halls. To connect, you'll need a computer that supports Ethernet and an RJ45 Ethernet cable.

The University provides secure, encrypted wireless network access in libraries, large residence hall study lounges, campus dining facilities, the athletic facilities, and many other public areas. However, wireless access is not available in students' rooms. For security reasons, and because they interfere with existing BU addresses, personal wireless access points are prohibited in the residences.

During fall move-in, the IT Help Center runs a ResNet Operations Center (ROC), staffed with a small army of technicians. Full-time and student staff provide specialized technical support to students as they return to the residence halls each fall, offering telephone and drop-in support, as well as on-site visits to students’ rooms. Our goal is to get everyone connected to ResNet as quickly as possible.

Your responsibility for securing your Computer in resnet

You are required to install effective anti-virus software in order to connect to the Boston University campus network. Windows-based PCs must also have anti-spyware software.

Failure to keep your computer patched and running current anti-virus (PCs and Macs) and anti-spyware (PCs only) software will result in your computer being infected. You could lose your files (Word documents, photos, MP3s, etc.) and you may have to do a full format and reinstall of your operating system.

THREE STEPS TO FOLLOW: We maintain a special site, dedicated to securing PCs, at www.bu.edu/tech/help/safe. There you can:

  1. Protect your PC by downloading and installing the latest Microsoft service packs and security patches (PCs)
  2. Download free, site licensed McAfee anti-virus software (PCs and Macs)
  3. Download free anti-spyware products (PCs).

Apple Macintosh computer users should also visit the Apple Product Security site for recommendations.

PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY: The same site also provides important recommendations to help you protect your identity.
