Configuring PPP (modem connection) for Windows XP
Run the Connection Wizard
- Go to Start -> Connect
To -> Show All Connections
[If you don't see a Connect To menu, click here for instructions]
- On the left side of the screen, click on Create a New Connection
- You are now in the New Connection Wizard. Click Next.
- Choose Connect to the Internet. Click Next.
- Choose Set up my connection manually. Click Next.
- Choose Connect using a dial-up
modem. Click Next.
The next two steps may not happen if your modem is already set up.
- Let Windows detect your modem (if it asks). Click Next.
- If Windows asks what port your
modem is on, choose COM1 for an external
modem or COM2 for an internal modem (unless you know that your modem is
on another port) Click Next. Click Finish to finish setting up your modem.
- For the name of your ISP, type BU Dial-up (or something similar). Click Next.
- For the phone number, enter 617 378-1111 (or other as determined by the table at the bottom of the page*) Click Next.
- Choose to make the connection available for My Use Only. Click Next.
- Type in your login name and password, and confirm your password. For your BU login name, use just the first part of your e-mail address - do not include the @bu.edu part.
- If this will be your main type of Internet connection, put a check mark next to Make this the default Internet Connection.
- If you wish, leave the check mark next to Turn on the Internet Connection Firewall for this connection. (Do not put a check mark here if you might ever be using VPN software with the wireless network). Click Next.
- Put a check mark next to Add a shortcut for this connection to my desktop. Click Finish.
- To connect to the Boston University Modem Pool, double-click on the shortcut on your desktop, then click Dial.
- You can also connect by going to Start -> Connect To -> and then clicking on the name you gave your connection (for example, BU Dial-up). Click OK in the window that appears, then click the Dial button.
- Once the connection is made, you can go ahead and use your Web browser and e-mail programs and other Internet applications.

- If you need to make a change to your connection, go to Start -> Connect To -> Show all Connections. Click once on your connection name. Then, choose Change Settings for this Connection.

phone number sequences for various situations.
