Configuring PPP for Windows 2000/ME
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Network and Dial-up Connections
- Click on Make New Connection. Click Next.
- Choose Dial up to the Internet. Click Next.
- Choose "I want to set up my Internet connection manually". Click Next.
- Choose "I connect through
a phone line and modem". Click Next.
Steps 6 and 7 may not happen if your modem is already set up.
- Let Windows detect your modem (if it asks). Click Next.
- If Windows ask what port your
modem is on choose COM1 for an external
modem or COM2 for an internal modem (unless you know that your modem is
on another port) Click Next. Click Finish to finish setting up your modem.
- For phone number, enter 617 378-1111 (or, for on-campus offices, 39600).
- Make sure there is a check mark next to Use Dialing Rules.
- Click on the Advanced button. Connection type is PPP and logon procedure is Log on manually.
- Click the Addresses tab.
IP address should be set to Internet service
provider automatically assigns one and DNS Server address should be set to
Always use the following:
Primary DNS Server: 128.197.253.188
Secondary DNS Server: 128.197.253.126 - Click OK. Click Next
- Enter your BU login name (For example, this would be the jschmoe part of jschmoe@bu.edu. Do NOT include the @bu.edu)
- Enter your BU password and click Next.
- Give your connection a name such as "BU Dialup" and click Next.
- For now, click No re setting up Internet mail account. Click Next.
- Do NOT put a check mark next to
"To connect to the Internet immediately,
select the box and then click Finish." - Click Finish.
Am I done?

If you do not dial up from the 617 area code, then you have finished your dialing setup (yippee!) and you may skip directly to Making your connection.

If you do dial up from the 617 area code, please follow the additional instructions below.
If you dial up from the 617 area code:
If you dial up from the 617 area code, you now need to perform a few more steps to make the connection use ten-digit dialing, which is mandatory in Massachusetts.
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Network and Dialup Connections and then click on the name you gave your connection (for example, BU Dialup).

Click on the Properties button in the resulting window.

Make sure Use dialing rules is checked, then click on the Rules button.
- In this Dialing Rules window,
select the Location from which you are dialing, and click
Edit. Or, click New if you want to set up a new
location.
- You are now on the General tab
of the Location window. Make sure the settings here are correct
for your location -- if you need to disable call waiting
or dial 9 to have your modem make an outside call, this is where
you make those changes.
- Click on the Area Code Rules
tab at the top of this window. Then click on the New
button.
- Set the Area code to 617,
then click to put a check mark next to Include the Area Code.

Click on the OK button twice. When you get back to the Dialing Rules window, take a moment to check what it says next to Phone number will be dialed as:. Make sure this number includes 617 and looks correct. Then click OK again.

You are returned to your Connect window. If you want to test your connection, click on the Dial button now. You should be all set.
Making your connection:
- To connect to the Boston University Modem Pool, go to Start -> Settings -> Network and Dialup Connections and then choose the name you gave your connection (for example, BU Dialup). Then click on the Dial button. Enter your BU login name and password when prompted. Once the connection is made, you can go ahead and use your Web browser and e-mail programs and other Internet applications.
