Configuring PPP (a modem connection) for Mac OS 8 and 9

1. To manually configure PPP for the Macintosh, you must change the settings in several Control Panels. The first one to configure is the TCP/IP Control Panel. To open the TCP/IP Control Panel, go to the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen, choose Control Panels, and choose TCP/IP.

2. Make your TCP/IP Control Panel match the picture above, then close the window. When prompted to save changes, choose Yes.

3. Next, go back to the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels again, and select Modem.

4. Choose the port that your modem is connected to (or Internal Modem, if you have an internal modem) from the Connect via menu at the top of the window. In the next menu, choose the listing that most closely matches your modem. If there is no listing that corresponds to your modem, contact the modem manufacturer for information on obtaining and installing a new Modem Script.

5. Once you have configured the control panel, close the window. When prompted to save changes, choose Yes.

6. The last control panel to configure is Remote Access. Once again, go to the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels again, and this time select Remote Access.

7. Next, determine the appropriate telephone number to dial. The following table lists the most common configurations.

If you are dialing from.

Enter this:

A location that has call waiting

*70 1 617 378 1111

A location that requires a "9" to reach an outside line
An off-campus location that does not have call waiting
An on-campus office in the 353 or 358 exchanges

9, 1 617 378 1111
1 617 378 1111
39600

Note that dialing the number in the eleven-digit format will not accrue long distance charges as long as you can normally place calls to metropolitan Boston with no additional fees. If you are unsure, please contact your telephone company first to avoid receiving any undesired charges. If metropolitan Boston is normally a long-distance call for you, then this will also be a long distance call and you might want to consider using a different ISP instead. Boston University does not have a 1-800 number.

8. Once you have determined the appropriate telephone number to dial, enter it into your Remote Access Control Panel.

9. You should also enter your Boston University Login Name. Note that we do not recommend saving your password for security reasons.

10. Next, click the Options. button and ensure that it matches the following:

11. Click OK and the close the Remote Access Control Panel. When prompted to save changes, choose Yes.
