instructions for configuring a desktop e-mail program

Many people find that the Web-based Horde mail client (www.bu.edu/webmail) is all they need, but you can also use the information below to configure any desktop mail program to read your BU e-mail.

These settings apply to all ACS accounts

  1. The mail protocol is IMAP. Please *do not* use the POP mail protocol.
  2. The IMAP mail server setting is acs-imap.bu.edu and you should use that with SSL (port 993).
  3. The SMTP server is acs-smtp.bu.edu and you should use that with authenticated SSL (port 465) by providing your username in the settings (and password, later, when prompted). Doing so should allow you to send mail using acs-smtp.bu.edu, even when you are not connected to the BU network.

Other information is specific to your account

Other instructions related to your use of e-mail can vary depending on the server your ACS mail resides on. To be sure you are seeing all settings that are applicable to your specific account, please click here.
