BUVS
BUVS – Boston University Virus and Security Tool
BUVS is an automated tool that will:
- Update your PC with all current Microsoft critical security patches
- Do a one-time scan of your PC for viruses and attempt to remove any that are found
- Send a success/failure status code to BU Information Services & Technology when the scan completes
This tool’s one-time scan utilizes McAfee VirusScan, for which Boston University has a site license. This tool does not provide continuing anti-virus protection. We strongly urge you to install both anti-virus and anti-spyware programs on your computer and keep their definitions up to date. After you have run this tool, see our Stay Safe page for links to download free anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.
If your PC runs a recent version of Windows, this tool will configure the built-in Microsoft Windows Update Service on your PC to download and install critical security patches automatically. If your PC runs Windows 9X, ME, or NT, you should run “Windows Update” from the “Tools” menu of Internet Explorer at least once each week.
EXIT all other programs, then click here to download and run BUVS
In the “File Download” box that appears, answer “Run” or “Open” when asked “Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?”. If you “Save” the file, you will need to locate the file and double click on it to run BUVS.
