Using BU (802.1x)

Most modern wireless devices support the 802.1x and WPA or WPA2 (recommended) protocols required to use the BU (802.1x) SSID. Please follow the steps below to set up BU (802.1x).

STEP 1 – Make sure you have an account, and that it is synchronized to AD:

You will need a BU login name and Kerberos password in order to connect to BU (802.1x). (This is the same login/password combination you may already be using to read e-mail or access BU’s Web Login.)

In addition, use of BU (802.1x) requires that your Kerberos password be “synchronized” into Boston University’s Active Directory. Any account created after April, 2008 should be all set, in which case you can skip ahead to Step 2.

However, if you can’t get BU (802.1x) working, Kerberos synchronization should be your first troubleshooting step. It can’t hurt to synchronize more than once, so if you aren’t sure of your AD status and your account was created before April, 2008, you should definitely do so – just do a one-time login and then you’ll be all set. [You can access that link from any browser; it does not have to be a browser on the notebook or device on which you are configuring BU (802.1x). However, if it is the device you are trying to set up, you should connect to "BU Wireless Help," launch a browser, and access the link from there.]

STEP 2 – Configure BU (802.1x):

Set up BU (802.1x) using the applicable instructions below.

STEP 3 – Set BU (802.1x) as the default SSID:

If you had previously used one of the other BU SSIDs, your computer or device might try to connect to that network first. In order to be sure your computer connects by default to BU (802.1x), make sure you followed the related steps in the Troubleshooting section of our configuration documentation.
