Microsoft Excel 2013 (Windows) - Part 1 (Introduction) - Faculty/Staff Only

This course is for Faculty and Staff only.

This course will be led by an expert instructor from our preferred training vendor, New Horizons. The cost of the session is $90 per participant. The cost includes the full day of training, plus materials that you can take with you at the end of the session. 

The course typically runs from 9-4, with an hour for lunch around noon, and short AM and PM breaks. (Please note that refreshments are not provided for sessions in computer labs; please plan accordingly.) 

The Part 1 course will familiarize participants with spreadsheet terminology and the fundamental concepts of Microsoft Excel 2013, including identifying Excel window components, navigating worksheets, and downloading templates. In addition, participants will learn the basics of entering and editing text, values, and formulas, and learn how to save workbooks in the native Excel format, as well as in other formats. Participants will learn how to move and copy data and formulas, how to determine absolute and relative references, and how to work with ranges, rows, and columns. Participants will also learn how to use simple functions, and how to easily apply formatting techniques to worksheet data. Participants will create and modify charts, and work with graphics. Finally, training attendees will review workbooks for spelling errors, modify page setup, and print worksheets.

Cancellation Policy:

Information Services & Technology pays a fee to New Horizons for each class. Because of the fee structure, we need to establish a cancellation policy that reflects the vendor’s cancellation policy.

Classes will occur based on enrollment. The vendor has a 14-day class cancellation policy, so we will cancel any classes with low enrollment 15 days in advance of the scheduled training; your money will be refunded if a class is cancelled for this reason.

You may cancel your registration for a full refund up to 15 days prior to the class. If you need to cancel for any reason after the 15-day mark, you are encouraged to find a colleague to attend the training in your place. If you are not able to find a replacement, we will make every effort to fill your seat with someone from the wait list – if this can be done, we will refund your payment. If we cannot fill the seat, your money will not be refunded and cannot be used towards a future class.

If you wish to register for a session that is full, please email ithelp@bu.edu, indicating that you would like to be put on the wait list. Please include the date and type of training that you're interested in – e.g., "March 18, Excel Part 3." If there are multiple sessions of interest, please note all sessions that you'd like to be put on the wait list for. Wait list seats will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Microsoft Excel 2013 (Windows) - Part 2 (Intermediate) - Faculty/Staff Only

This course is for Faculty and Staff only.

This course will be led by an expert instructor from our preferred training vendor, New Horizons. The cost of the session is $90 per participant. The cost includes the full day of training, plus materials that you can take with you at the end of the session. 

The course typically runs from 9-4, with an hour for lunch around noon, and short AM and PM breaks. (Please note that refreshments are not provided for sessions in computer labs; please plan accordingly.) 

The Part 2 course will teach participants how to work with large worksheets in Microsoft Excel 2013, as well as providing training for using multiple worksheets and workbooks efficiently. The course will introduce participants to more advanced formatting techniques, such as applying special number formats, using workbook styles and themes, adding backgrounds, and mimicking watermarks. Participants will learn how to create outlines and subtotals, in addition to learning how to create and apply cell names. Participants will sort and filter data, and create and format tables. Additionally, participants will learn how to save workbooks as Web pages, how to insert and edit hyperlinks, and how to share workbooks via email. Participants will learn how to audit worksheets for errors, how to protect worksheets, how to share and merge workbooks, and how to track changes in a workbook. Finally, participants will customize the Excel environment, and create and modify custom templates.

Microsoft Excel 2013 (Windows) - Part 3 (Advanced) - Faculty/Staff Only

This course is for Faculty and Staff only.

This course will be led by an expert instructor from our preferred training vendor, New Horizons. The cost of the session is $90 per participant. The cost includes the full day of training, plus materials that you can take with you at the end of the session. 

The course typically runs from 9-4, with an hour for lunch around noon, and short AM and PM breaks. (Please note that refreshments are not provided for sessions in computer labs; please plan accordingly.) 

In the Part 3 course, participants will build on the skills acquired in the Microsoft Excel 2013 Part 1 and Part 2 courses. Participants will work with advanced functions and formulas, as well as lookup functions such as VLOOKUP, MATCH, and INDEX. In addition, participants will learn about data validation, and will use advanced data filtering. Participants will apply advanced chart formatting options and create more complex charts. Participants will also work with PivotTables and PivotCharts, export and import data, and query external databases. Participants will learn about the analytical features of Excel, such as Goal Seek, and how to create scenarios. Finally, participants will run and record macros, and explore VBA code.
