The Planning Committee—Members of the Symposium

Margaret Schmidt, Assistant Professor of Music Education-strings, holds the Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Michigan, the Master of Music in violin performance from SUNY-StonyBrook, and the Bachelor of Music Education from Lawrence University. Prior to her appointment at ASU, Dr. Schmidt was Associate Professor of Music Education and interim Chair of the Music Department at St. Cloud State University. A specialist in string education, she taught public school string classes and orchestra for fourteen years in Naperville, Illinois, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Austin, Minnesota.

Dr. Schmidt specializes in qualitative research and her dissertation, Learning from experience:  Influences on music student teachers’ perceptions and practices, received an Honorable Mention for 1994 from the Council for Research in Music Education. Her current research focuses on preservice and beginning teachers’ development. She has published articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, and American String Teacher. She has presented papers at conferences of the American Educational Research Association, the Mountain Lake Colloquium for Teachers of General Music Methods, the Symposium of the Society for Music Teacher Education, and the Asia-Pacific Society for Research in Music Education. She has translated and published, with editor Stephen Shipps, a 1916 violin method by Lucien Capet, La Technique Supérieure de l’Archet [Superior Bowing Technique].

Dr. Schmidt is a frequent presenter at conferences for inservice teachers, including the Music Educators National Conference and the American String Teachers Association. She is founder and director of the ASU String Project, which in 2005 received the Robert Jesselson String Project Consortium Award for the nation’s most outstanding String Project.
