up-to-date can be a pain. Consider using the ACS cluster
or a server managed by your local system administrator.
If you must run your own mail server on a system running:
- BU Linux: see the BU
Linux FAQ. The default configuration acts as a
client only and will not receive mail.
- Solaris or IRIX: download the sendmail tarball
at ftp.bu.edu:: unix/software/sendmail. The version
number may be out-of-date, but all necessary patches
have been applied! Questions? Contact

available to you on a Solaris or IRIX machine are:
- pine : This program can
be used with sendmail or imap. Your imap server can
be either local or remote. Save your MS Windows attachments
to a separate folder and read them from a "VMWare"
window running Windows.
- netscape
mail: This program can also be used with sendmail
or imap.
while the most frequently used Linux mail tools are:
You may also want to use procmail
to filter your mail. All of these programs are part
of the default installation. For BU Linux, a .procmailrc
will be read automatically with no changes to your .forward
bile.
