IRIX Patch Installation

We recommend installing patches from the BU patch site. You're likely to experience fewer 'conflicts' with packages already installed on your machine because only patches that have successfully installed on several BU IRIX machines are located there.

Note that the most recent sendmail patch transforms a "mail server" into a "simpleclient". For more information and alternative configurations, see Configuring Sendmail.

Follow the 9 steps below to install patches from the BU site to your SGI workstation:

1. Log into your workstation and become superuser.

2. Type: mount sgimedia.bu.edu:/base /mnt

3. Type: cd /mnt/IRIX_6.5/patches

4. Type: /usr/sbin/inst

5. At the "Inst>" prompt, type: from . (notice the period)

6. When the system has done some checks, it will bring you back to the Inst> prompt. At this point type: conflicts

7. If there are "No Conflicts", type: go

Conflicts? Please choose an appropriate option or contact us.

No patches to be installed? You should get the following error: "ERROR: Nothing selected for installation"

8. After the patches have been installed, type: quit

Depending on the patches installed, the system may or may not do a "Requickstarting ELF files".

9. Reboot your workstation.

Contact us if you run into any problems installing patches.

You can also install patches directly from SGI.
