Patches
Keep up-to-date with patches.
Don't let someone exploit a known security hole on
your operating system. Stay current and install patches
quickly.
Solaris patching can be automated with an OIT tool
called PatchAlert. Or, you
can retrieve patches
directly from Sun.
Managing SGI patches isn't quite as convenient. You
are encouraged to purchase a software
support contract so you can receive the operating
system and application patches that are in regularly
released IRIX Maintenance Upgrades.
Sometimes upgrading to a new version of IRIX is not
convenient or affordable. At those times, feel free
to use the OIT maintained SGI patch area. It has security
patches for BU IRIX machines which have installed without
problems on OIT machines. Our testing is admittedly
minimal. Your alternative is to download and install
patches one-at-a-time from SGI. These may or may not
work on BU IRIX machines.
