Desktop Hints
Allow icons to represent the programs you use most
often for a convenient point-and-click system.
When you log into a Solaris console, choose Options
-> Session -> GNOME X.X Desktop.
Once inside a default GNOME desktop, add icons representing
applications to an edge panel. Drag your mouse to the
panel, right-click, and then select Add to Panel
-> Launcher. The Create Launcher window
will pop up.
To illustrate how to configure a number of applications,
examine the setup for the programs listed below. Click
here to see what a complete
point-and-click system looks like.
OpenOffice , a MSWORD
compatible reader/writer
Pine , a mail tool
Mathematica , a math tool
Matlab , another math tool
Mozilla , a web browser
Xterm ssh session , a connection
tool
All icons, except the ones used for xterm connections,
are part of the Solaris 9 distribution and can be found
under /usr/share/pixmaps. You can also create
new icons with tools like 'gimp'.
To change your background, click on Applications
-> Desktop Preferences -> Background.
The background in the example is a No Picture
choice. Click on Top Color,
select a color from the range, then click on Bottom
Color and select a second color.
