Ten Sustainable Actions

In order to encourage behavior change we’ve compiled Ten Sustainable Actions to address throughout the course of the academic year, focusing on one each month. We’ve also partnered with Carbonrally, who tracks how well we’re doing in reducing our carbon footprint on campus through friendly competitions between the colleges.

It’s our hope that through outreach and education, the BU community will make a conscious effort to use less and pick up a few meaningful facts along the way.

Did you know?

  • The energy saved by recycling a single aluminum can, or glass bottle, could operate a television set for three hours, or light a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.
  • An average shower uses about 5 gallons of water per minute. If you shorten your shower by 2 minutes, you can cut your water use by 10 gallons.

Ten Sustainable Actions

01) Use Compact Fluorescents
02) Bring Your Own Mug
03) Carry a Reusable Shopping Bag
04) Computer Power Savings
05) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
06) Take Shorter Showers
07) Think Before You Print
08) Turn Off the Lights
09) Walk More, Drive Less
10) Wash Clothes in Cold Water

Walk More, Drive Less

BU offers many alternatives to driving solo. You can walk, bike, take the T, city bus, or BU Bus. When you need to drive, there are 19 ZipCars available on campus and an additional 39 within a ½ mile radius of campus.
