Boiler Efficiency Upgrade

A number of locations on campus have undergone oil to dual fuel conversions including:

  • 610 Beacon St (3 boilers, No. 4 oil)
  • 640 Comm Ave (2 boilers, No. 4 oil)
  • 730 Comm Ave (2 boilers, No. 2 oil)

These conversions improve burner efficiency, provide financial savings, a reduction in carbon emission of 1,032 tons annually, and a 34% reduction in CO2 over the course of ten years.

Five boilers that supply steam from the George Sherman Union to 111 Cummington St. recently underwent a retrofit that saved the University 12 percent in No. 4 fuel oil costs, and 13 percent in electrical fees during its first year of operation. The Linkageless control Micro Modulation System coupled with an Exhaust Gas Analyzer reduces both energy consumption and harmful emissions by controlling the combustion process using microprocessor technology, which is one of the most accurate on the market. Relative positioning of a number of channels, such as fuel, air, and atomizing, are checked 50 times per second.
