Move-In Cardboard Recycling
This year, through a coordinated effort with FM&P, Custodial Services, Residence Life, Housing, BUPD, Save That Stuff (BU’s recycling vendor), the Scarlet Squad, and sustainability@BU, the University recycled 25.3 tons of cardboard!
How did we do it?
By training Scarlet Squad volunteers, we got the word out to incoming students and families that cardboard recycling is an important part of our operations at BU. As each resident made their way to the elevator to return their moving cart, they were instructed to “break it down” and “toss it in,” bringing cardboard to the designated recycling area. Supporting those efforts, Save that Stuff had trucks emptying over 20 locations around campus—from fenced areas to dumpsters—all week. sustainability@BU intern Tori Dearborn brilliantly coordinated efforts between all involved to ensure this would be our best recycling effort to date!
…and it was!
Scarlet Squad-ers also posted photos on Twitter and Instagram for the @sustainableBU photo competition. Post-event recycling numbers showed that #BUSouth emerged as the winner of the per-capita recycling competition. Congrats South Campus!
