Dennis Carlberg, Sustainability Director

Dennis Carlberg, AIA, LEED AP is an architect with over 25 years of experience. In January 2009 Dennis joined Boston University as its first Sustainability Director. He comes from a Boston area architectural firm where he was a partner, senior designer, and chaired the sustainability committee, which he established in 2000. Dennis began his career at the Solar Energy Research Institute conducting daylighting research to reduce building energy consumption and improve the indoor environment.
Dennis also co-chairs the Sustainability Committee at the Urban Land Institute – Boston, a committee dedicated to exploring policies and solutions that address global climate change and which are both feasible and effective at the nexus of energy, land use, infrastructure and real estate.
Dennis received his Master of Architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
At Boston University, Dennis is responsible for:
- Developing and implementing a strategy to integrate sustainability principles into the operational functions of the University.
- Communicating, informing and promoting these principles and programs throughout the University.
- Acting as the campus spokesperson on sustainability and providing outreach to local and national organizations as well as funding agencies.
Lauren Stanton, Communications Specialist
Lauren Stanton is the Communications Specialist for Boston University Facilities Management & Planning. Lauren graduated from Boston University’s College of Communication in 2010 with a BS in journalism and worked for four years as a student employee for Facilities Management & Planning. Lauren is interested in photography, design, and new media. Some of Lauren’s major responsibilities include website support, public relations, as well as project photography and graphic communications.
sustainability@BU employs student interns who focus on specific areas:

Nairika Murphy is currently finishing her joint MA/BA degree in Energy & Environmental Analysis within Boston University’s Geography & Environment Department. Nairika’s interests include environmental policy, clean energy technology, energy efficiency, and environmental economics.
Nairika joined sustainability@BU in October of 2009 as a Research Intern and now serves as the Communications & Outreach Intern. Nairika manages all social media initiatives as well as the Join the Challenge campaign and EcoRep Program development. Other responsibilities have included event planning, presentations, and support for LEED Certification projects on campus.

Mike Orr is a graduate student in the Energy & Environmental Analysis degree program. His interests include urban planning, transportation, and building energy use. Prior to working with sustainability@BU, Mike attended Knox College and interned at the Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago.

Patrick Pease is a Graduate student at Boston University majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Patrick received his bachelor degree from BU last year in Manufacturing Engineering. As well as working at here, Patrick is a Teaching Assistant for several CAD course in the College of Engineering. He is interesting in sustainable manufacturing, green energy technologies and product design. His responsibilities include:
- Sustainable Action Metrics
- Dashboard creation and maintenance
- Chart generation for publications

Meredith Withelder is a recent graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with a bachelors degree in Environmental Analysis and Policy. She joined the sustainability@BU team in January 2011 as the Sustainability Strategic Planning Coordinator and as a research assistant. Her major duties include:
- Managing all content for the Strategic Plan
- Researching potential sustainability initiatives for Boston University
- Creating behavioral change signage for Sargent College
- Editing website content and internal organizational documents
- Participating in and helping to organize various outreach events
