A Day in the Life of a Commuting Research Intern

What can you expect as a research intern at Boston University? You will be deeply immersed in laboratory activities and research for 40 hours per week, from approximately 9 am to 5 pm each weekday, although some labs have different schedules. Additionally, you will attend weekly workshops run by the RISE Coordinator to supplement your lab education, discuss your research, and plan for your final poster.

You won't be on the meal plan, but you'll be able to dine with your friends by purchasing meals at the food court in the George Sherman Union (hours vary by individual restaurant) or in the Warren Towers dining room. Warren Towers offers a wide variety of cuisine for all tastes and preferences, including vegetarian and vegan options. The dining staff can also assist you with food allergy concerns and other dietary restrictions. Meal times are below:

Dining Schedule

Breakfast 7 - 9 am, Monday-Friday
Lunch 11:30 am - 1:30 pm, Monday-Friday
Dinner 5 - 7 pm, daily
Weekend brunch 10:30 am - 1:30 pm, Saturday & Sunday

While studying at Boston University as a commuter, you will attend social activities with your Research Internship peers and High School Honors program students. Commuter students are expected to attend orientation on Sunday, June 29th, where you will get your BU Photo Terrier ID card and BU email account. You will also meet your assigned program assistant. During your first week, you can expect a variety of fun group events on the BU campus and throughout Boston, so you can get to know everyone. After that, each weekend has a planned activity that everyone participates in, as well as some optional activities during the week. You will have access to Warren Towers from 7am-11pm daily. Take a look at our Schedule of Events to see the types of exciting activities we plan.

You'll have plenty of free time to enjoy the BU campus and all that Boston has to offer. You can purchase a short-term membership to Boston University’s Fitness & Recreation Center, study at one of BU’s 24 libraries, or relax on the BU beach.
