Physics
Check back on December 15th for Summer 2010 courses.
College of Arts and Sciences
CAS PY 105, PY 106, PY 211, and PY 212 carry schedules of ten supervised lab sessions, allowing students time to complete a minimum of eight lab projects during the term.
Elementary Physics I
CAS PY 105
Prereq: algebra and trigonometry. Satisfies premedical requirements. Principles of classical physics, mechanics, fundamental concepts of energy, conservation laws, heat, and energy transformation. Students must register for three sections: a lecture section, a discussion section, and a laboratory section. 4 cr.
Elementary Physics II
CAS PY 106
Prereq: CAS PY 105 or equivalent. Satisfies premedical requirements. Principles of classical and modern physics, electricity and magnetism, light, atomic and nuclear physics, energy sources, and transformations. Students must register for three sections: a lecture section, a discussion section, and a laboratory section. 4 cr.
General Physics I
CAS PY 211
Prereq: one semester of calculus. For premedical students who wish a more analytical course than CAS PY 105 and for science concentrators and engineers who require a physics course with calculus. Basic principles of physics, emphasizing mechanics, thermal physics, conservation laws, and the fundamental concepts of energy. Students must register for three sections: a lecture section, a discussion section, and a laboratory section. 4 cr.
General Physics II
CAS PY 212
Prereq: CAS PY 211 and one year of calculus. For premedical students who wish a more analytical course than CAS PY 106 and for science concentrators and engineers who require a physics course with calculus. Basic principles of physics treating electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic waves, including refraction, interference, and diffraction phenomena. Students must register for three sections: a lecture section, a discussion section, and a laboratory section. 4 cr.
Directed Study
CAS PY 491/PY 492
Prereq: consent of instructor. Variable cr.
