Choosing the Right General Chemistry Course: CAS CH 101 or CH 171

CAS CH 101 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence of introductory chemistry. The course is designed for science concentrators who require a two-semester general chemistry sequence (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, premedical/dental). CAS CH 171 is a one-semester course designed for students who do not require two semesters of general chemistry (biological and health science majors). CAS CH 171 does not fulfill the prerequisite requirement for any second semester general chemistry course offered at Boston University.

General Chemistry I
CAS CH 101
Prereq: two years of high school algebra. For science concentrators. Stoichiometry, gases, equilibrium, acids and bases, selected chemical systems. Laboratory exercises include qualitative analysis. Students must register for three sections: lecture, discussion, and laboratory. 4 cr.

CAS CH 102
Prereq: CAS CH 101. Liquids and solids, physical properties of solutions, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, and selected chemical systems are studied. Students must register for three sections: lecture, discussion, and laboratory. 4 cr.

Principles of General Chemistry
CAS CH 171
Introduction to chemistry: separation and purification of matter, atomic theory, structure of atoms, molecules and chemical bonding, chemical formulas, equations, stoichiometry; water, solutions, concentration, acids, bases, pH and buffers; gases; reaction kinetics and equilibrium, and radioactivity. Students must register for three sections: lecture, discussion, and laboratory. 4 cr.

Quantitative Analytical Chemistry Laboratory
CAS CH 201
Prereq: CAS CH102. Applications of quantitative analysis. Equivalent to the laboratory part of CAS CH112. One hour lecture, four hours lab. 2 cr.

Choosing the Right Organic Chemistry Course:

CAS CH 172 is a one-semester survey course which covers fundamental aspects of organic chemistry. It is designed for students interested in the biological and health sciences, who do not require a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry. CAS CH 172 does not fulfill the prerequisite requirement for any advanced chemistry course (except CH 273) offered at Boston University.

CAS CH 203/204 is a two-semester sequence of organic chemistry. The sequence of courses usually satisfies the requirements of students who are interested in premedicine/dentistry, other medical/health sciences, or biological sciences.

CAS CH 203/214 is a two-semester sequence of organic chemistry. The sequence of courses is designed for students who need a more intense laboratory experience than is provided by the CH 203/204 sequence. The CH 203/214 sequence is acceptable toward chemistry and BMB (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) concentration credit.

Principles of Organic and Biochemistry
CAS CH 172
Prereq: CAS CH 171 or (CH 101 and CH 102). Organic chemistry: structure, stereochemistry, and reactions of carbon compounds; emphasis on compounds of biochemical interest. Structure and function of molecules of biological importance. Students must register for three sections: lecture, discussion, and laboratory. 4 cr.

Organic Chemistry I
CAS CH 203
Prereq: CAS CH 102, CH 110, CH 112, or equivalent. CAS CH 203 and CH 204 meet premedical requirements for organic chemistry. Fundamentals of contemporary organic chemistry including electronic structure, stereochemistry, and reactions of important functional groups. Environmental problems, action of drugs, chemical warfare agents, insecticides, and chemical causes of disease. Laboratory includes extraction, distillation, and chromatography. Course includes a three-hour tutorial for in-depth discussion of issues introduced in the lecture, work on supplementary problems, and practice with mock examinations under supervision of the organic chemistry staff. Students must register for four sections: lecture, discussion, prelab, and laboratory. 4 cr.

Prereq: CAS CH 204. Laboratory methods in organic chemistry including multistep synthesis, organic qualitative analysis, and instrumental analysis. Meets with CAS CH 214 prelab and laboratory. 2 cr.

Biochemistry I
CAS CH 421
Prereq: CAS CH 204, CH 212, or CH 214. Introductory biochemistry. Protein structure and folding, enzyme mechanisms, kinetics, and allostery; nucleic acid structure; lipids and membrane structure; bioenergetics; vitamins and coenzymes; introduction to intermediary metabolism. Students must register for two sections: lecture and laboratory. Meets with CAS BI 421. 4 cr.

Biochemistry II
CAS CH 422
Prereq: CAS CH 421 or BI 421. Polysaccharides, energy storage and recognition; intermediary metabolism; lipid and isoprene metabolism; nitrogen metabolism; nucleotide metabolism, macromolecular biosynthesis with emphasis on specificity and fidelity in the mechanisms of RNA, DNA, and protein synthesis. Students must register for three sections: lecture, discussion, and laboratory. Meets with CAS BI 422. 4 cr.

Undergraduate Research in Chemistry
Experimental or theoretical investigation of problems including use of the literature. Requires attendance at weekly research seminars and the writing of a report at the end of each session. Students must apply through the Department of Chemistry office during the first week of each summer session. Available Summer 1 and 2. Variable cr.
