SAR HS 251/HS 551 Human Nutrition Science
An introduction to the science of nutrition for students with college-level preparation
in the life sciences. Basic information regarding carbohydrates, protein, fats,
vitamins, and minerals is presented. Issues such as eating disorders, the role
of diet in the development of chronic diseases, and diet and exercise are reviewed.
The development and practical implementation of current dietary advice is discussed.
A critical approach to the evaluation of scientific data is emphasized. 4 cr.

SAR HS 342/HS 542 Exercise Physiology
Prereq: CAS 211 or consent of instructor. Application of physiological
principles under different exercise conditions. Integration of the body systems
in performance of exercise, work and sports; immediate and long range effects
of these activities on the body. Laboratory includes the measurement of physiological
parameters under exercise conditions. 4 cr.

SAR HS 581 Gross Human Anatomy
Prereq: CAS BI 105 and BI 106 and BI 211. Integrative approach to the
musculoskeletal, peripheral nervous, and circulatory systems of the human body.
Regional approach
used to present lectures with projected materials, films, slides, and demonstrations.
Laboratories reinforce the lectures with a study of osteology, dissected cadavers,
and live anatomy palpations. 4 cr.

SAR AT 205 Athletic Training Practicum I
AT students only or consent of AT program director. Initial exposure to the role
and skills of an athletic trainer. Includes certification in CPR. 1 cr.

SAR PT 515 Physical Therapy Examination
Prereq: SAR HS 581. Coreq: SAR PT 520. This course is designed to teach the process
of examination by physical therapists. Selected measurement tools used for
examination of individuals in order to establish a physical therapy diagnosis
are taught. A Systems Approach to examination is introduced and models of disablement
are used to guide the process. The course is taught in conjunction with SAR
PT 520, Functional Anatomy and directly applies content learned in that course.
Note: This course starts one week prior to the official start of Summer 2.
DPT students only. Students must register for two sections: lecture and lab.

SAR PT 520 Functional Anatomy
Prereq: SAR HS 581. Designed to develop an understanding of human musculoskeletal
function, the course presents the principles of biomechanics, muscle physiology,
and joint structure that govern normal function. These principles are applied
in examination of the joints of the upper extremity, lower extremity, and spine,
as well as in the study of posture and gait. While emphasis is on normal function,
the foundation is laid for understanding deviations from the normal that lead
to pathological function. Note: This course starts one week before the official
start of Summer 2. Students must register for two sections: lecture and
discussion. 4 cr.

Prereq: SAR SH 521 and SH 524. Overview of current models of normal
phonological development. An introduction to phonological/articulation disorders,
including phonological acquisition,

Application of International Phonetic Alphabet to sounds of American
English. Detailed analysis of vowel and consonant sounds. Standards of pronunciation.

Anatomy and function of the structures involved in respiration, phonation,
and articulation. Introduction to neuroanatomy and neural control of the production

Introduces current theories of normal language acquisition and traces
the stages of normal language development from the prelinguistic period through

Attributes of sound and the mechanisms of hearing pertaining to classical
study of the science of audiology. Elementary physics of sound and the decibel,
anatomy of the aural mechanism, essentials of hearing theory, pathologies of
the auditory and related systems, basic pure tone audiometric technique. 4

Prereq: SAR SH 535. Theory and techniques of aural rehabilitation
of hearing-impaired individuals of all ages and etiologies. Covers current
case management strategies, traditional methods of speech reading, and auditory

Prereq: consent of instructor. Anatomical and physiological bases of voice
production. Diagnosis and therapy for phonatory disorders in children and
adults. Function of the team philosophy for speech pathologists in vocal

Reviews evaluation and treatment of head-injured adults at all levels
of recovery, from coma to acute rehabilitation and post-acute rehabilitation.

Advanced differential diagnosis in speech pathology. Review of pertinent
research, interpretation of test results, and discussion of the implications
of the diagnostic findings in a total rehabilitation process. 3 cr.

Prereq: SAR SH 738 and consent of instructor. Experience with the interpretation
of videofluoroscopic evaluations of dysphagia. Specific disorders and etiologies
in the evaluation and treatment of dysphagia with an emphasis on research in
