Dependent Coverage

NOTE: Dependent coverage does not automatically roll over to the new plan year. If you wish to enroll your dependents for the 2017-2018 plan year, please see the information below.

2017-2018 plan year (August 23, 2017 – August 14, 2018)

Students must be enrolled at the PLUS plan level to add eligible dependents.  The final day to upgrade to the annual PLUS plan is September 30.  Students enrolled at the BASIC level for the 2017/2018 policy period are not eligible to add dependents to their plan.

If your student account is assessed for the Boston University Student Basic level with your semester registration, visit the Student Link, select Money Matters, Medical Insurance, Medical Insurance-Confirm/Waive, Change Enrollment to the Student Plus Plan, and Reauthenticate and Confirm Change. Then, visit Aetna Student Health’s website to add your eligible dependents at the Student Plus level before the open enrollment deadline.

If you enrolled in the Boston University Student Basic plan through a written request, you may send an email request to requesting to change to the Student Plus Plan. Be sure to include your BU ID number with your request.

The Open Enrollment Deadline for the Annual Policy is September 30, 2017.

Students enrolled in the Student Plus plan for Fall 2017 Semester

For students enrolled for the 2017-2018 policy year effective August 23, 2017, through August 14, 2018, the rates for the family plan are:

Student (Student PLUS): $2,813

Spouse (Student PLUS): $2,813  (in addition to student, subscriber)

One Child (Student PLUS): $2,813  (in addition to student, subscriber)

Two or More Children (Student PLUS): $5,626  (in addition to student, subscriber)

The Dependent rates are also be published in the 2017-2018 Policy Brochure available at Aetna Student Health’s website.  The 2017-2018 documents will be available in late June.  The Open Enrollment Deadline for the 2017-2018 Policy Year is September 30, 2017.)

Important Note

You must be an Aetna Student Health member to add your dependents to the plan. Dependent premiums will be charged to your Boston University student account 7 to 14 business days after you submit your online enrollment. You will be responsible for payment in full of any resulting balance due.

*Eligible dependents are the insured student’s lawful spouse and dependent children under 26 years of age.

Note: Dependents of the student enrolled in the plan are not able to be seen at Student Health Services and do not require a referral from Student Health Services to access the outpatient benefits. A list of Preferred Providers may be viewed using Aetna’s DocFind® service at or through Aetna Navigator.
