Borrowing Privileges

All scholars welcome here.

The Theology Library encourages the pursuit of personal and academic research in all stages of life. So we open our doors to the public for in-house consultation of all our materials, without exception.

Borrowing Privileges

On-campus borrowing privileges are extended to affiliates of Boston University and its local consortia.

All registered Boston University students, and all Boston University faculty and employees identified through internal computer records, have full borrowing privileges. School of Theology students may also have borrowing privileges at Boston Theological Institute (BTI) and Boston Library Consortium (BLC) libraries, but must first obtain a BTI Borrower’s card from the Theology Library or a BLC card from Mugar Memorial Library (771 Commonwealth Ave). All School of Theology students, staff, and faculty are provided with interlibrary loan services through the Theology Library. Interlibrary loan services are accessible here.

Boston University alumni are eligible to borrow materials on-campus if they present their alumni card. Alumni cards can be printed online from the Benefits page of the Alumni section of the BU website, here.

Members of the Boston Library Consortium may also borrow materials from the School of Theology Library if they have identification from their home institution and a BLC card. BLC patrons must present their card first to register at the Mugar Memorial Library (771 Commonwealth Avenue) before borrowing materials at other BU libraries. For more information on the Boston Library Consortium, please click here.

Members of the Boston Theological Institute may also borrow materials from the School of Theology Library if they have identification from their home institution and a card (for Boston College students only). Students from Boston College not presenting a BLC card must present their BC identification and either a BTI card or a letter (on official stationary) stating they are students in the Theology Department or the School of Theology and Ministry. For more information on the Boston Theological Institute, please click here.

Visiting Scholars may be granted borrowing privileges only with the authorization of the Dean, while other visitors will need approval of the Head Librarian.

Further Services

Off-campus borrowing is encouraged through interlibrary loan for those who may not fit into the above categories. Please contact your local library or academic institution for more details about interlibrary loan.

Digital copies of out-of-copyright research materials are being made freely accessible at the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org) as an ongoing project to increase access and preserve the information contained in those materials. Feel free to browse our IA materials here.
