Instructions for completing the Application for Financial Aid

General | How to Apply | Application | Types of Financial Aid | Eligibility | Contact Us

Boston University School of Theology awards financial aid to assist students who could not otherwise afford the educational expenses associated with study at this institution. Virtually every student who applies will qualify for a scholarship at the School of Theology. Some students are selected to receive scholarships based on their previous academic record. Other students receive a need based scholarship to assist in the payment of tuition and fees. All School of Theology students benefit from reduced tuition at the Boston University. Tuition for full-time attendance in the academic year 2005-2006 is $13,120. The per credit charge for part-time registration is $410. The Doctor of Ministry per credit rate is $375. Please see the Financial Information section of the School of Theology Bulletin for a more complete description of the financial aid program.

To be eligible to receive any financial aid at the School of Theology (Scholarships for Merit, need based Tuition Scholarships, Federal Loans, Work Study, etc.), students must submit:

  1. the Application for Financial Aid
  2. scores from Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA). Financial aid will not be awarded until these items are received. All returning second and third year students must send items 1 and 2 to the Director of Registration and Financial Aid by May 15, 2005. Late applications are subject to a reduction or denial of aid.
Here are instructions for completing the Application for Financial Aid. This application has two pages. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Personal Information
Provide the School of Theology with your name, Social Security Number or BUID if you have one.  Also provide your current address, your summer address, or the address you would prefer the Office of Registration and Financial Aid use to contact you during the summer. If either of these addresses change prior to the start of classes in September or January, you are required to notify the Office of Registration and Financial Aid.

Academic Information
Please list the degree program and year you entered the program (or will enter the degree program).  Will you register during the next academic period as a full-time student (12 to 18 credit hours) or as a part time student (fewer than 12 credit hours)?  Note that one course usually equals four credit hours. The normal full-time course load is four classes, or 16 credit hours.

Please review the Academic Information section carefully. Financial aid is renewable each semester for the normal length of a degree program. If after that period additional course work must be undertaken to make up for deficiencies, financial aid will be awarded based on available funds. Two semesters of part-time financial aid equals one semester of full-time financial aid.

Financial Aid for Which I am Applying
Indicate the specific financial aid programs for which you would like to be considered.

Students who are eligible to be considered for the Scholarship for Merit or a Doctor of Theology Fellowship will be notified by the School of Theology. Marking this item will not result in a review by the Scholarship Committee unless the applicant’s admissions file has been sent to the Committee. Scholarships for Merit are awarded for the semester of initial enrollment at the School of Theology and are subject to academic review each semester thereafter.

Please list any grants, awards, loans, or scholarships you have applied for, or will apply for outside Boston University. For example, if you expect a scholarship from your local church, please list the kind of award and the anticipated amount.

If you want to be considered for a Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan, please indicate the amount you wish to borrow from each federal loan category. Refer to the following brief description to determine the amount you wish to borrow.

About the Federal Direct Loan Program
Boston University has been chosen by the U. S. Department of Education to participate in the Federal Direct Stafford/Ford Loan Program. All University students will receive their student loans through this program, which has the same loan limits, interest rates, and fees as the Federal Stafford Loan Program.

The Federal Direct Stafford/Ford Loan is a low-interest loan available for post-secondary educational expenses. Most matriculated students are eligible for a Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Direct Stafford/Ford Loan. The loan is made directly to the student who is responsible for repayment. The interest rate for new loans is a variable rate that is set annually in July, and is equal to the 91-day T-Bill plus 3.10%, but is capped at 8.25%.

Subsidized Direct Loan - You will not be charged interest until you begin re-payment. Repayment begins six months after you cease to be enrolled at least half-time. Maximum eligibility is $8,500 for graduate students.

Unsubsidized Direct Loan - The government will not pay interest on your loan while you are enrolled, as it does for the Subsidized Direct Loan. Interest accrues, and must be paid or capitalized during periods of in-school enrollment and/or deferment. Maximum eligibility is $10,000 for graduate students.

There is a 3% origination fee and a 1% guarantee fee deducted from your loan prior to disbursement.
