Field Education
Site Requirements
Thank you for considering the Boston University School of
Theology Field Education program. In order to help your site
determine its participation in our program, the following
is an outline of our requirements.
Supervision
Each student is supervised for one hour each week during the
academic year. If no one at your site is an approved supervisor
through the Boston Theological Institute (BTI), someone from
your site can be trained as a supervisor. This involves taking
a four-credit supervision course at Boston University. The
course will meet about twice a month throughout the academic
year, and must be taken while supervising a student. There
is no fee for this course. Once someone is certified, he or
she can supervise any field education student from any of
the BTI schools. (If the BU course times are not possible,
a similar class is offered at other BTI schools)
On occasion, Boston University may be able to find an off-site
supervisor to work with the student. Our experience is that
on-site supervisors generally are more beneficial for the
student. Once the initial year-long training course is completed,
supervisors are asked to attend four three-hour supervisors
meetings during the years they supervise an intern. These
are generally held in the mornings at the School of Theology.
Internship committee
Each site must form an internship committee of four to six
people. The internship committee must meet with the student
for one to two hours once a month. At least two of the four
to six members of the committee must attend two internship
committee meetings during the academic year. These are generally
held in the evenings at the School of Theology.
Stipend
As of Fall 1996, the field education site is not required
to supply a stipend for the student.
Learning agreement and the evaluations
In September, the supervisor, internship committee and intern
develop goals for the year in the form of a learning agreement.
This can be adjusted at the beginning of the second semester
if necessary. Also, all three parties are responsible for
an in-depth mid-year and final evaluation. Instructions for
both the learning agreement and the evaluations are provided
at the beginning of the year.
