1999 Brown Lecture Series
Church, Society, and the Twenty-first Century

Tex Sample, STH '60, is the the Robert B. and Kathleen Rogers Professor Emeritus of Church and Society at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri. He is the author of The Spectacle of Worship in a Wired World: Electronic Culture and the Gathered People of God. Mr. Sample is well-known for his contributions to the study of church and society, particularly in the area of the modern church, ministry, and evangelism. He will receive the School of Theology Distinguished Alumnus Award for Service to the Profession on Wedsnesday, October 13.

Mark S. Harvey, STH '71, GRS '83, is a United Methodist minister, musician, lecturer in music at MIT, and scholar in music, religion, and culture. He is a fellow and board member of the Society for the Arts, Religion, and Contemporary Culture. He has presented jazz liturgies and concerts of original compositions as well as papers and lectures on music and religion for national and international audiences. With the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, Mr. Harvey will present a concert celebrating Duke Ellington's sacred music at the annual meeting of the Academy of Religion in Boston, in November 1999.

Noon - 2 PM
Community Lunch:
Tex Sample and members of the School of Theology community will hold a panel discussion on The Spectacle of Worship in a Wired World.

3 - 4:30 PM
Tex Sample and Linda Clark will lead a Congregational Studies Forum.

6 - 9:30 PM
Dinner and Lecture: Tex Sample, keynote speaker; Mark S. Harvey, respondant. Tex Sample will receive the School of Theology Distinguished Alumnus
Award during the dinner.

Attend a Master Class with Mark S. Harvey.

1 - 2 PM Service at Marsh Chapel: Mark S. Harvey will preach, accompanied by the Seminary Singers and the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra.

Join Mark S. Harvey for Professor Horace Allen's course,
Inroduction to the Arts of Worship.
