Dean Mary Elizabeth Moore to Step Down as Dean of STH
September 2019 – Mary Elizabeth Moore, Professor of Theology and Education and Dean of the School of Theology, has announced that she plans to step down from her leadership role at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 academic year. Dean Moore joined Boston University as the dean of the School of Theology in January 2009 when she came from Emory University, where she held the position of Professor of Religion and Education at Candler School of Theology, and the Director of Women in Theology and Ministry Program. She is a deacon in the United Methodist Church and has a passion for theological education. Throughout her professional career and academic tenure, Dean Moore has authored several books, held various visiting professorships and scholarship positions, served on many editorial boards, and received honorary doctorates from Hebrew College and the University of Judaism.
Upon Dean Moore’s announcement, Boston University Provost Jean Morrison described Dean Moore’s leadership of the School as “clear-headed, compassionate, and inspired…[H]er passion for theological education and dedication to building a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world are apparent to all who have interacted with and been impacted by Dean Moore during her time at Boston University.” Provost Morrison added that Dean Moore has been “among BU’s most vocal champions of diversity and social justice over the last 10 years, leading efforts both at the University level – as co-chair of the recent task force to re-envision the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground – and within STH to create a safe and welcoming environment for women, minorities, and the LGBTQIA+ community.”
In a letter sent a few days ago to School of Theology faculty, staff, and students, Dean Moore wrote, “The greatest joy of my professional life has been working with the outstanding faculty, staff, students, and alums of the School of Theology and Boston University. You overflow with vision and commitment. Our faculty care deeply about students and are excellent teachers, scholars, and transformative leaders. Our students are incredibly bright and passionate, thirsty for learning and committed to fostering justice and goodness in faith communities and in the wonderfully diverse human and earth family. Our administrators and staff infuse the community with life and keep us moving toward our best selves. All of you together have effected dramatic and lasting change in our School, and the future is in very good hands!”
Dean Moore plans to take a research sabbatical during the 2020-2021 academic year, after which she will officially retire from teaching. An event to celebrate and honor her accomplishments and contributions to Boston University and the School of Theology is planned for next spring.
