Mr. William D. Whipple (STH ’58) passed away on November 1, 2011

Professor Emeritus Harold Oliver passed away on Thursday, 22 September 2011. Harold H. Oliver was a member of the Boston University School of Theology faculty from 1966 through 1997, named in 1997 as Professor Emeritus of Philosophical Theology and New Testament. One of his former students, John Thatamanil, writes of him: “For each of us, Harry’s presence was a vital blessing in our lives. I cannot imagine who I would be without him, and in this way the truth of his relationalism shows itself in our lives.” Harry was an interdisciplinary scholar, entering STH in 1966 as Associate Professor of New Testament, becoming Professor in 1970, shifting his title in 1988 to Philosophical Theology and New Testament, and in 1989 to Philosophical Theology. He also served as Director of the Doctor of Ministry program for a few years. His journey was a vital and integrative one, and he touched many lives. Minnietta M. Millard (STH ’66) passed away on September 9, 2011.

C. Phillip Bosserman (STH ’55, GRS ’63) passed away on September 7, 2011.

Former professor, Dr. Homer Jernigan, died over the weekend of July 30-31, 2011. Dr. Jernigan was the Albert V. Danielsen Chair of Pastoral Care and Counseling until his retirement in 1991. He left a strong mark on his students and colleagues, as well as on his profession. Dr. Jernigan did considerable research in Singapore and Taiwan, seeking to understand pastoral counseling and theology within a global frame. One of his later articles, appearing in Pastoral Psychology, was “Ministry with the Aging: A Cross-Cultural Perspective.” He also contributed an essay to ATS’s Theological Education: Global Education and the Practical Theological Education Disciplines entitled “Teaching Pastoral Theology from a Global Perspective” (1993). On this day following his death, we remember our treasured BU colleague.

Reverend John A. ‘Jack’ Taylor died on July 29, 2011.

The Reverend James M. Smith (STH ’51) died on June 10, 2011.

Dr. John H. Cartwright (STH ’57, GRS ’72) and former Martin Luther King Jr. Professor Emeritus at Boston University died on April 22, 2011. He was the Martin Luther King Professor of Social Ethics in the School of Theology, beginning in 1976, and has been Professor Emeritus since his retirement in 1998. Dr. Cartwright is survived by his wife, Gloria Cartwright.
