Off-Campus Housing

If on-campus living is not desirable, the School of Theology does maintain relationships with several residences that are located within commuting distance to Boston University.  The School of Theology does not inspect, endorse, or recommend any specific units or vendors listed, but many seminarians have taken advantage of these housing resources through the years.

If you are interested in sharing an apartment in the Boston area, but do not have a roommate in mind, the Admissions Office may know of another seminarian who is in the same situation.  Complete the Roommate Matching Form, found under the housing resources on this website.  Your information will be compared to others who have completed the form, and if a match is possible you will be put in contact with one another to talk.  This is an appropriate resource for folks who plan to rent an apartment with extra spaces available, or for folks who are hoping to room with someone who already has an apartment with extra spaces available.  If you have any questions about the Roommate Matching Form, please contact the Admissions Officer at 617-353-3036 or sthadmis@bu.edu.

Andover Newton Theological School Dormitory

Andover Newton Theological School is one of the member schools of the Boston Theological Institute.  The seminary’s dormitories are located in a beautiful, quiet, secluded area of Newton, MA, about a half hour from Boston University School of Theology by train.  Since it is a seminary campus, an interfaith Chapel and library will be readily available to ANTS residents.  Housing is offered to BUSTH students after all Andover Newton Students are housed. There is a one time administrative fee of $200.00, along with the first month’s rent, necessary to secure a room. Rental costs vary between $400 per month and $700 per month, depending on the size and style of room (single or studio apartments).

Some spaces are also available for a per-night basis for commuter students at a rate of $35/night.

Buswell Street Residence

This is a wonderful option for someone who would like to live on-campus while paying off-campus prices.  The Buswell Street Residence is located, appropriately, on Buswell Street, which is just a 3-minute walk from the School of Theology.  It is not owned or maintained by the University, but rather a landlord who has personal ties to the School of Theology.  As such, she is eager to rent to School of Theology students.

The Buswell Street Residence includes several rooms, which are rented individually, one large 1.5 bedroom apartment, and two studio apartments.  You can see pictures of the residence and its rental properties, as well as contact the landlord directly through this website:  http://www.buswellstreetresidence.info/

Contact: Gloria, the property’s landlord, at 617-285-1701, or through the “contact” form on the above website

Nottinghill Road

This large house in the residential Nottinghill Road area of Brighton, MA, has housed School of Theology students for many years.  The first floor is a two bedroom apartment, washer and dryer included. The second and third floors are a four- bedroom apartment with common kitchen and living areas, as well as two full baths.  Each single room is very large, with the two top rooms rivaling the size of some studio apartments in the city! The house has a lovely, spacious backyard, is a short walk from public transportation (the Green “B” Line, which takes you to the front doors of STH within 15 minutes), and is located near a small public park.  Parking is available on-street with a resident parking pass.  One room on the second floor and third floor is available. A BU law student and BUSTH student live in the other two bedrooms. The cost for the smaller 2nd floor bedroom is approximately $700/month, and $750/month for the larger 3rd floor rooms. These rates do not include utilities.

Walker Center

The Walker Center is located in Auburndale, MA, and has been a place of hospitality for more than 140 years.  Beginning as a house for missionaries returning from the field for a short time, the Walker Center retains its global concern by providing housing at affordable rates to international seminarians and seminarians who are studying mission or international conflict transformation.  The range of rates for these rooms, depending on size, is between $600 to $800 per month.  Parking is an additional $30 per month, and on-site laundry is $10 per month.

Purchase a Condo

This option is not possible for every incoming student.  However, for some students, purchasing an apartment near the School of Theology is the best option.  Just as Boston rental prices are higher than in most parts of the country, so are Boston sales prices.  Even so, a purchased condo provides students the opportunity to build equity during their degree programs, rather than simply renting.  With a decent down payment, oftentimes the cost of a mortgage is comparable to the cost of renting an apartment, and the investment can typically be recouped upon sale at the end of a degree program.  Persons with pets especially may want to consider this option.  If purchasing is a possibility for you (that is, if you are financially able to make a down payment of at least 5-10% for a condo), feel free to contact the Realtor below, who has helped School of Theology students and staff successfully in the past.
