Electronic Theses and Dissertations Guidelines

Format Review

Students are required to submit their thesis or dissertation for a minimum of two format reviews. Format review covers areas such as margins, page numbers, and footnotes. The actual content of the thesis or dissertation is between the student and their reader(s). Students submit their thesis or dissertation in PDF format to the Advanced Studies Program Coordinator according to the graduation deadlines listed above.

A minimum of two format reviews are required and additional reviews may be required if formatting issues are not corrected by the student. If more than three format reviews are required, the student will be charged a $100 fee. A last format review is done on the student’s final dissertation to ensure that there are no significant errors.  If errors are found, the student will be contacted and will need to resubmit.  The format review done on the final dissertation does not count towards the number of format reviews that would trigger the $100 fee.

Prior to submitting a draft for format review, students must consult the Research Guide for Writers of Theses and Dissertations and Electronic Submission for formatting instruction. Samples of properly formatted pages can be found here. For formatting questions not covered in the guide, consult A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, by Kate L. Turabian (8th ed., 2013). Videos for solving common formatting issues can be found here.

Final Copy Submission and Fees

The final copy of the thesis or dissertation will be submitted in electronic form only. Theses and dissertations are subject to format approval before final acceptance. Students may not move forward to their final copy until they have been notified by the Advanced Studies Committee that they have completed format review.

In order to graduate, students must (1) submit an electronic copy of their thesis or dissertation on the ETD Administrator site here, (2) pay the associated fees through a designated STH library staff member (Master’s Thesis is $25, Doctoral Dissertation or Project Thesis is $115) (3) and submit two hard copy signed signature pages to a designated STH library staff member. A final format review will be done on the copy the student submits on the ETD Administrator site. If any major issues are discovered, such as typos on the preliminary pages, the student will be contacted and corrections will be required. The degree will be withheld until all materials are fully, punctually, and accurately submitted.

Walkthrough videos for submission on the ETD Administrator website can be found here.

A Microsoft Word dissertation template has been created by Mugar Library staff here.  As noted on the linked page, it is not required that you use this template and it is not a fool-proof method.  It is simply a tool meant to assist you.

According to the Mugar Library, “Boston University’s policy is that BU theses and dissertations should be made openly accessible when they are submitted so that the benefits of research can be widely shared.  This FAQ discusses the factors to think about for those of you considering an embargo.”
