What is the Advanced Studies Committee?

From section 1.2 of the Ph.D. handbook: “According to the Faculty Bylaws of the School of Theology, the Advanced Studies Committee (ASC) is a faculty committee providing oversight for the operation of the S.T.M., Th.D., Ph.D. and D.Min. degrees. With regard to the Ph.D., the ASC reviews and approves dissertation prospectuses and reviews unsatisfactory academic progress and grades.”

From section 1.2 of the Th.D. handbook: “Specifically, [the ASC] serves as the admission committee for [the STM, Th.D. and D.Min.] degrees, reviews and approves plans of study, dissertation proposals (Th.D.), project proposals (D.Min.), and reviews unsatisfactory academic progress and grades.”

Who sits on the Advanced Studies Committee?

The Advanced Studies Committee is comprised of a rotating group of STH faculty members representing each of the four Areas. Dr. Christopher Brown is the Chair of the Advanced Studies Committee.

When does the Advanced Studies Committee meet?

The committee normally meets once per month during the academic year. Check the meeting schedule at the top of this page for specific dates.

What is the Ph.D. Program Committee?

The Ph.D. Program Committee works in coordination with the ASC and serves as the admission and fellowship nominating committee for the degree. The director of the Ph.D. program serves as chair of the committee, and is responsible for oversight, coordination, and promotion of the Ph.D. degree program.
