United Methodist Ecumenical Chaplain Job Announcement

The United Methodist Ecumenical Campus Ministry at Syracuse University seeks applications and nominations for the position of United Methodist Ecumenical Chaplain. Historically, this has been an ecumenical ministry of The United Methodist Church in cooperation with the Presbyterian Church USA, United Church of Christ and American Baptist Church. It is also an integral part of the diverse, interfaith Hendricks Chapel Chaplains’ Council.
The ministry of UMECM on campus includes leadership of weekly worship services, coordinating discipleship groups, planning service outreach programs, and offering pastoral counseling, among many other student outreach opportunities. The ministry also encourages student-led initiatives – by recruiting student leaders and providing support for these student-led initiatives. The chaplain works directly with a variety of students including student chapel interns, developing student leaders.
Beyond the campus, the Chaplain also provides leadership for the college’s interaction with The United Methodist Church, and regional campus ministries in partnership with the Conference College Campus Ministry Team throughout the Upper New York Annual Conference.
The Chaplain is an active, participating member of the Hendricks Chapel Chaplains’ Council, a ten-member interfaith body that meets regularly to join in cooperative ecumenical and interfaith programming. As a University Chaplain, the UMECM Chaplain serves not only UMECM, but the wider University community. At times the Chaplain may be called upon to offer pastoral care to students from many different faith backgrounds, serve on University wide committees, represent the Chapel at University events and functions, preside over memorials and/or weddings, support students, staff and faculty in crisis, offer prayers for special occasions, and/or assist individuals in their own religious and spiritual development.
The successful candidate will have a deep personal faith as well as an inviting and supportive personality; energy, enthusiasm, and flexibility for the work of the chapel, making it a welcoming and approachable part of the students’ campus experience; an awareness of the significance of working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff; an openness to and appreciation of a variety of theological and religious beliefs; desire to mutually agree to work with people of many religious and non-religious traditions; effective oral and written communication skills; effective listening and counseling skills; a commitment to assisting students discover their own faith journey; and a proven record of consistent leadership in ministry in local, regional and national contexts.
Masters of Divinity degree; ordination within the United Methodist, Presbyterian Church USA, United Church of Christ, or American Baptist churches.
Experience with young adult and/or campus ministry; experience working with interfaith initiatives; ordination within The United Methodist Church.
