Our Journalists

The journalists in the Boston University Statehouse Program are seniors and graduate students from the Boston University College of Communication. Some may have experience writing or creating multimedia content for news outlets in the past; for others, this might be their first foray into professional news. But all bring the skills and ethics garnered from their first-rate education, and a deeply professional attitude, to their work.

Kayla Canne covers the Statehouse for http://www.thesunchronicle.com/. Canne is a senior at Boston University studying journalism and international relations. She has worked as an editorial intern for UniversalHub and Boston Magazine, an completed a full-time editorial internship for a weekly newspaper in Sydney, Australia. Sarah Faulkner covers science and technology issues for the Statehouse Program. A graduate student at Boston University studying science journalism, Faulkner majored in chemistry and biology at Emmanuel College as an undergraduate. She has since moved from working in the lab to writing about science policy. She also writes a blog called “The Untold Stories of Science: A Collection of Revolutionary Women throughout Scientific History”.

Heather Goldin covers the Statehouse for the Sentinel & Enterprise of Fitchburg, MA. A Boston University senior majoring in Journalism and minoring in American Studies, Goldinspent the Fall semester with Boston University’s Washington, D.C. Program, interning for CNN Politics. She has also completed internships with Washington CBS affiliate WUSA9FierceMarketsThe Orange County Register and Jamaica Plain News. Heather is president of The Society of Professional Journalists and a board member of The Daily Free Press. Her interests lie in politics, cyber security, investigative journalism and breaking news. Ayush Kumar is the Statehouse Program’s general assignment reporter. A Boston University senior, Kumar wrote for The Daily Collegian at UMass-Amherst before transferring to BU. He has interned at Big Cheese and Vive Le Rock Magazines during his study abroad and recently launched the new website for TasteBUds, an on-campus food magazine.

Kyle Plantz covers the Statehouse for The Lowell Sun. A Boston University senior studying journalism, political science, and history, Plantz is a former editor-in-chief of BU’s independent student newspaper, The Daily Free Press. He has also interned at IJReview in Washington D.C., the Thomson Reuters Foundation in London covering climate change and environmental news, and the Boston Globe as a metro correspondent. Most recently, he worked with the political team at The Hill publication in D.C. covering policies introduced by Congress.

Stacy Schoonover is the videographer for the Statehouse Program. A junior at Boston University majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Political Science, Schoonover’s past experiences include a newsroom internship at WBZ-TV CBS, production assistant and correspondent for Boston Neighborhood Network News, reporter and associate producer for BUTV10’s Inside Boston, and a field reporter for BU News Service. Stephanie Pagones covers the Statehouse for the Daily Hampshire Gazette of Northampton, Ma. Pagones is a senior studying journalism and political science. She has worked for the New York Post as an investigative reporting intern and a freelance investigative reporter. She has also worked at The Daily Free Press, where she was a city reporter, associate news editor and city news editor and as a reporter for other BU-affiliated publications, including The BU BUZZ Magazine and Off the Cuff magazine. She has also worked as an investigative assistant at a private investigation firm.

Rachel Riley covers the Statehouse for The MetroWest Daily News of Framingham, MA. Riley, a senior, was a mer Boston Globe co-op student and works Wednesday nights on the Globe’s City Desk. She has interned for the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, working on stories related to health, medicine, energy and environment. She also interned at the New Zealand Herald’s sustainability-themed monthly Element and worked at BU’s The Daily Free Press as a staff writer and editor for the campus news section. Dani Segelbaum covers the Statehouse for The Milford Daily News. Segelbaum is a senior studying journalism and political science. She has worked for Boston Common Magazine and interned in London as a city reporter. Last summer she worked for Marie Claire Magazine as a features intern. She has also worked at BU’s student magazine, The BU Buzz.

Carly Sitrin covers the Statehouse for WCAI-FM in Falmouth, MA. Sitrin is a Boston University junior studying journalism and international relations. She is currently the senior editor at BU’s online independent magazine, The Quad and has interned at 90.9 WBUR and MuckRock News.

Trisha Thadani covers the Statehouse for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Thadani is a senior studying journalism with a concentration in international relations. She has worked as a Boston correspondent for USA Today, following a summer writing about business and technology for the paper. She also spent six months in 2014 writing metro news for the Boston Globe as a co-op, and has studied abroad in Sydney, Australia where she wrote features for a small local newspaper. Trisha also worked at BU’s Daily Free Press as a reporter, editor, and columnist. She will be joining The Boston Globe after graduation to work as a metro intern covering breaking news and general assignments.
