Lyons wins tight race in 18th District
LOWELL – State Rep. Jim Lyons of Andover won the 18th Essex District race, which includes portions of
Tewksbury, defeating Andover Democrat Barbara L’Italien by just over 600 votes.
Lyons, the Republican incumbent, reported 11,835 votes. He said L’Italien received 11,210 votes.
Lyons said he attributed his victory to his “terrific” team and the volunteers that assisted his campaign.
“I’m very grateful for the efforts of all of the volunteers who helped us win this election,” he said.
He also wanted to thank the voters for pledging confidence in him again.
“I look forward to representing them on Beacon Hill,” he said.
Lyons said in the next session, he will fight to eliminate the patron system that he said has been in place on Beacon
Hill, while also working to roll back taxes.
Lyon emphasized his goal to get local aid for his district during the next session. He also stressed the importance of
keeping the state’s budget process transparent.
L’Italien did not respond to requests for comment. She was attempting a comeback, as she’s a former state
representative who left elective politics to work on the staff of state Auditor Suzanne Bump.
