non-BU machine

These instructions are for connecting to SSW file storage while using a machine that is not joined to the University’s Active Directory network, such as your personal, home computer.

The basic steps for connecting are:

  1. Connect to the Internet
  2. Connect to the BU network
  3. Connect to the File Share

Connect to the Internet

Please make sure that your computer is connected to the internet either via a wireless connection or plugged in.

Action Steps

  1. Plug in or connect to a wireless network
  2. Test internet by opening a web browser and going to your favorite webpage

Connect to the BU network

If you are on the Charles River Campus or at BU North, and you are connected to a BU provided internet service (BU Wired Network or BU Wireless), you are already connected to the BU Network.

If you are off-campus, then you will need to use the VPN to connect to the BU network.

Connect to the File Share

The method for connecting to the server varies depending on your operating system (windows or mac).  Please read the credentials section and then

Credentials – IMPORTANT

During this process, you will be asked for login credentials.

  • Use “AD\login” (omit the quotation marks) where login is your BU login and your regular kerberos password (i.e. if your bu email isawesome@bu.edu, your would use AD\awesome as the login name for this part).

Action Steps - Windows

  1. On your computer press the windows key and the R key simultaneously
  2. This will bring up the Run dialog
  3. Type/paste “\\ist-deptfs1.ad.bu.edu\ssw_shared\” (omit the quotation marks) the entire folder path if you know it
  4. Enter your credentials (see above)
  5. Click OK or press Enter
  6. This will bring up the root folder of our shared files.  From there, you can navigate to the folder of your choice.

Action Steps - Mac OSX 10.6.x – Snow Leopard

  1. In the Finder, go up to the top menu and click on Go and then Connect to Server…
  2. Depending on the version of Mac OSX  put in the appropriate Sever Address.
  3. type or paste smb://ist-deptfs1.ad.bu.edu/
  4. Click Connect
  5. Enter your credentials (see above)
  6. Select the volume SSW_SHARED to mount
  7. This will then open the server folders. Navigate to the directory you’d like to use and open files as you would on windows

Action Steps - Mac OSX 10.5.x – Leopard – must be Intel-based

  1. In the Finder, go up to the top menu and click on Go and then Connect to Server…
  2. Depending on the version of Mac OSX  put in the appropriate Sever Address.
  3. type or paste smb://ist-deptfs1.ad.bu.edu/ssw_shared/
  4. Click Connect
  5. Enter your credentials (see above)
  6. This will then open the server folders. Navigate to the directory you’d like to use and open files as you would on windows
