Support Community Health & eat pie!
I am a first year student here at BUSSW. This spring I am running the Boston Marathon for Team Brigham. My goal is to earn at least $3000 all of which will go towards community health programs in the greater Boston area. In order to raise money I am selling homemade pies. How it works, you make a tax-deductible donation to Team Brigham and in return I give you a delicious pie made from scratch (my specialties are pumpkin, pecan, and chocolate cream)! Please check out my fundraising page
( http://www.firstgiving.com/sarahhauke ) and email me at sehauke@gmail.com if you have any questions or are interested. I can't wait to cook for all of you!!!

Loan Forgiveness for Social Workers: An Act encouraging licensed social workers to work in child welfare and human services programs
2007-2008 Legislative Session HB1191
Priority Legislation for National Association of Social Workers, MA Chapter (NASW)
Lead Sponsors: Rep. Smitty Pignatelli, member of Higher Education Committee, Rep. Carl Sciortino
Brief Description of Legislation: This bill would create a student loan repayment program administered by the board of higher education for licensed social workers who have completed a baccalaureate or masters degree in social work at a public or private college or university in Massachusetts.
What this legislation does: This legislation creates a loan forgiveness program to encourage social workers to work in child protective services programs or in other underserved areas in accordance with guidelines established by the board of higher education in consultation with the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. The program will be subject to appropriation.
Why this legislation is needed: Social work salaries are amongst the lowest for professionals and in particular for those with a master’s degree. The median salary for beginning master’s level social workers with 2-4 years of experience is $35,600 . In Massachusetts, the average social work student graduates from a BSW program with a debt of $24,809 and from an MSW program with a debt of $42,980 . These levels of debt are unmanageable and have the effect of dissuading qualified students from staying in the field or out of financial necessity from pursuing social work as a career.
A 2006 analysis by the Public Interest Research Group showed that 37% of public college and 55% of private college graduates have unmanageable debt as a starting social worker . State government has a role to play in ensuring qualified and educated professionals enter the field of social work. Social workers often work on the front lines, protecting vulnerable children, elders, disabled individuals, and those in poverty. Creating a loan repayment program is an important first step in making a career in social work an affordable option for those who wish to pursue this important line of work in Massachusetts.
