Personal Reflections on the Birth of the Gay-Straight Alliance/Safe Schools Movement Monday, November 19, 2007, 6:30 - 8:15pm

The Safe Schools movement began 20 years ago in Massachusetts. It aims to make schools safe for all students irrespective of sexual orientation or gender expression. Through Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), students conduct dialogues, presentations, and awareness-building events such as No Bullying Week and the annual Day of Silence. Although supported by teachers, parents and staff, the movement is student-directed.
Today there are 300 GSA's in Massachusetts and over 3600 in the USA.
- Why did the movement start here in Massachusetts?
- Why has it been successful in an era of right-wing reaction?
- What challenges did the pioneers encounter?
- How have they been changed by their experience
