Awards
Nominees for Alumni Association Awards should have the highest
standards of professional integrity and personal conduct, should have
advanced values, ethics, and knowledge of the profession, and should
support public and social policies that ensure equal rights for all
regardless of race, creed, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation,
income, or disability.
The categories for its 2009 awards are:
The Hubie Jones Urban Service Award
Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Social Work
Outstanding Career in the Field of Social Work
Outstanding Contributions to the School of Social Work
Outstanding Contributions to the Alumni Association
The Hubie Jones Urban Service Award
This award, which recognizes the many contributions of Dean
Emeritus Hubie Jones, acknowledges and honors a BUSSW graduate
who actively pursues the urban mission and goals of the School
through her/his practice of social work.
Nominators are asked to give concrete examples of how the nominee
has put into practice the urban mission and goals of the School by
furthering social and economic justice; empowering oppressed
groups; building on the strengths of children, families, communities,
and organizations; demonstrating leadership in a complex
multicultural society; demonstrating skills needed to mediate
conflicts brought about by social, racial, and economic inequity in the
urban environment; and/or by advocating for the recognition of
emerging fields of practice and job opportunities for social work
professionals.
Outstanding Career in the Field of Social Work
This award acknowledges and honors a BUSSW graduate who,
throughout her/his career (minimum twenty years), has consistently
demonstrated exceptional contributions to the profession and the
community-at-large.
Nominators are asked to give examples of the nominee’s
contributions throughout her/his career in any or all aspects of social
work practice including advocacy; clinical practice with individuals,
families, and/or groups; education; community organization;
administration; program development; research; public policy;
and social planning.
Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Social Work
This award acknowledges and honors a BUSSW graduate whose
contributions to social work have been of exceptional value to the
profession and the community-at-large.
Nominators are asked to give examples of the nominee’s
contributions throughout her/his career in any or all aspects of
social work practice including advocacy; clinical practice with
individuals, families, and/or groups; education; community
organization; administration; program development; research;
public policy; and social planning.
Outstanding Contributions to the School of Social Work
This award acknowledges and honors BUSSW faculty and staff
whose contributions to social work education have been
outstanding. It is understood that the nominee has been actively
involved in social work education at Boston University through
one or more of the following: teaching, supervision, consultation,
research, administration, staff support, and/or scholarship.
Nominators are asked to give concrete examples of the nominee’s
contributions to the School in any or all of the following areas:
a. Social work education in the development of knowledge
(through research), the dissemination of knowledge (through
teaching), and/or scholarship or administration.
b. Demonstration of exceptional effectiveness, gaining respect
and admiration of colleagues, alumni, and/or students.
c. Putting into practice the School’s urban mission and goals.
d. Providing exceptional staff support that benefits the
BUSSW community--faculty, staff, alumni, and/or students.
Outstanding Contributions to the Alumni Association
This award acknowledges and honors significant contributions to
the BUSSW Alumni Association. The nominee may be a
member of the faculty, staff, student body, or of the Alumni
Association itself, who has demonstrated support for the goals
and activities of the Association.
Nominators are asked to give concrete examples of the nominee’s
contributions to the development and betterment of the Alumni
Association through the application of her/his special skills.
Areas of contribution may include fundraising; student
recruitment; public relations between the School and the
community; the development of linkages between students and
alumni to empower students to participate in activities of the
Alumni Association; and/or programmatic and organizational
support.
Review Process
The deadline for submission of nomination materials is July
15, 2009.
Instructions for Nominations
Nominators are asked to submit a completed nomination
form and two (2) letters of support. You may submit
your nomination form online.
The BUSSW Alumni Association Board will consider
all nominations. Both nominators and nominees will be
notified of the board’s decision by September 1, 2009.
Award recipients will be announced in the BUSSW Newsletter,
Currents, and will be honored at the School’s Alumni Association
Awards Luncheon on Saturday, October 24, 2009.
