Boston University School of Social Work offers an Online Master of Social Work Program in Clinical Social Work Practice. This part-time online program consists of two options to complete the MSW degree. The eligibility to pursue a specific option is dependent on previous human services experience.

  • Human Service Experience (HSE) Track Applicants who have a minimum of two years of supervised human services experience may apply to be considered for Human Service with Experience Track (HSE). Students in this track are required to complete 65 credits within 8 consecutive semesters and complete a single 1,000 hour field internship.
  • Traditional MSW Track (TT) Students in the traditional track are required to complete 65 credits within 8 consecutive semesters and complete 2 field internships totaling 1200 hours in the field.

Utilizing a convenient online learning format, the program allows individuals to earn an MSW degree while continuing to live and work in their own communities. Students take the required and elective courses online; and complete one or two field internships (depending upon relevant work experience) within or near their geographic area.

Courses are taught by Boston University’s faculty who is committed to continue to provide leadership, mentorship, and to share their expertise and current research initiatives in the online Master of Social Work program. Through this program, students throughout the United States can now access their vast experience and expertise in current and emerging social work practice.

All applicants must have a cumulative academic average of 3.0 (B) or higher for undergraduate study is our standard requirement. Applicants whose GPA is below 3.0 will be considered for admission but must submit standardized test scores to supplement their application. The online program is available for applicants living in the USA except those from NH, MD and those residing within the Massachusetts Route 128 corridor. Applications for the Online MSW Program are accepted each semester and applicants can apply to enter the program in September, January or May.
