In Concert with Others: Collaborative School Conversations in Ethics and Cultural Competence
This daylong workshop will focus on ethical issues and dilemmas involving confidentiality in the morning and cross-cultural competency in the afternoon. The morning session will explore the confidentiality issues arising in our communications with other professions within the school setting and outside of the school setting regarding individual student concerns. We will examine the NASW Code of Ethics, HIPAA, and FERPA regulations and develop frameworks for guiding the sharing of student information. This session will discuss use of social networking sites, especially issues of disclosure and the professional use of self. The afternoon session will address issues of cultural compentency in work with new arrival populations. Concepts including the ecological approach, phases of migration, cultural orientation, and cultural competency will be applied to practice with students and families migrating from other contexts. Examples of individual and family experiences from Africa will be included. The combined focus on ethics and cultural competency will strengthen student-focused and supportive school communities.
