Preparing for Commencement

The 2014 SPH Commencement Ceremony will be held Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Avenue. Each year, Boston University also holds an All-University Commencement Ceremony in May. The 2014 All-University Commencement Ceremony will be held Sunday, May 18, at 1 p.m. at Nickerson Field, 285 Babcock Street. Tickets will not be required for either ceremony.

This guide has been prepared in an effort to anticipate as many questions as possible. As Commencement approaches, graduates will receive additional and more specific information. Important information about Commencement will be mailed to the address that is on file with the Registrar’s Office. Please contact us with any questions. Commencement is a rite of completion, and the ceremony honors the achievement of the graduates and expresses the pleasure, excitement, and pride of their families, teachers, and friends.

Academic Dress

Degree candidates participating in either the SPH ceremony or the all-University ceremony are required to wear University-approved regalia. Bachelor’s and master’s candidates must purchase their regalia, while doctoral candidates have the option to purchase or rent. Academic dress will be available via Herff Jones and Barnes & Noble @ BU.

Ordering Regalia
January 1 through March 19, online ordering is available through Herff Jones and includes a $10 discount on all regalia packages. Orders can also be placed in-store at Barnes & Noble @ BU beginning April 28. With online orders, you’ll have the option of home delivery or pick-up at Barnes & Noble @ BU, with the exception of doctoral regalia, available for in-store pick-up only. You may also order regalia online.

Beginning April 28, 2014, degree candidates may visit the Barnes & Noble @ BU in Kenmore Square to purchase master’s regalia or rent doctoral regalia.

Master’s degree candidates must purchase keepsake academic dress. The complete master’s package is $103 online by March 19, or $113 in-store beginning April 28. The master’s package includes gown, cap, tassel, master hood, and 10 printed announcements.

Doctoral candidates must rent academic dress or purchase custom doctoral regalia. The complete doctoral rental package costs $85 when ordered online by March 19, or $95 in-store beginning April 28. Please note that rentals must be returned prior to May 23 to avoid late charges, and transcripts will be withheld by the University from any student failing to return rental items. The doctoral package includes gown with velvet panels, black velvet tam, tassel, doctoral hood, and 10 printed announcements.

Custom doctoral regalia, available for purchase, is priced based on requirements. All custom orders must be made by March 2 through a fitting appointment with the Barnes & Noble @ BU General Merchandise Department, 617-236-7402.

Please Note: As part of all academic dress packages, each graduate will receive ten printed general announcements of Commencement Exercises at Nickerson Field; additional announcements are available for purchase. These announcements do not limit the number of guests you may bring to the Nickerson Field ceremony.

Orders for pick-up will be available at Barnes & Noble @ BU beginning April 28. To ensure that you receive the proper academic dress for your Commencement ceremonies, please plan to pick up your order no later than May 9.

For further information regarding academic dress and announcements, contact Barnes & Noble @ BU at 617-236-7402 or by fax at 617-236-7418.

SPH Student Services also has a limited supply of academic regalia to loan to master’s students who plan to attend Commencement. Loaner regalia will be available for graduating students on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning Tuesday, April 15.
