Health Policy & Management Concentrator’s Guide 2014-2015

Health policy and management is the multidisciplinary study of many factors—including social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors—that affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately our health and well-being.   Concepts and models from many fields—including economics, management, policy, psychology, and sociology—are brought to bear on the problems and successes of the U.S. healthcare system in order to advance our understanding of how it can be improved.

The Health Policy & Management (HPM) concentration prepares students to make health care more equitably accessible, affordable, and effective for all people.  The members of the HPM department are concerned with critical issues and challenges facing the US health care system. HPM faculty members are actively engaged in innovative research pertaining to such topics as reducing the number of uninsured, assessing the competitive effects of hospital mergers, improving provider-patient communication and developing more effective and efficient ways to manage health service delivery. HPM faculty members serve as consultants to private industry and government agencies including the Department of Veterans Affairs, with which the department is closely affiliated through a VA funded research center. These and other research and consultation projects by HPM faculty provide rich opportunities for students to gain hands–on research and practice experience.

Upon graduation, HPM concentrators are equipped with the knowledge and skills essential for understanding and intervening in the financing, policy-making, planning, and management and organization of health care services. Graduates are employed as managers, research analysts, and advocates within private and public sector organizations across the U.S. and beyond.
